Spring Athletic Update:

March 11, 2021

Re: Extra Curricular Athletic Activities Update Lord Tweedsmuir Secondary School

Dear Parents:

The Athletic Department at Lord Tweedsmuir would like to update our parent group on the current status of athletic activities at Lord Tweedsmuir. At the present, all inter school sport activities are still suspended by BC School Sports (High School Sport’s Governing Body).  The latest update from BC School Sports allows for individual training to still occur provided it can be conducted following the guidelines as published in the K-12 Education Restart Plan

Only skills based training may occur and this training can only occur if:

  • physical distance can be maintained between members of different learning groups (Cohorts)
  • reduced physical contact can be practiced by those within the same learning group (Cohort)

As for our spring sports (Girls Soccer, Boys and Girls Rugby, Track and Field, Ultimate and Spring Football Camp) individual training for each of these sports is up to the discretion of the coach whether or not they wish to run individual skill based training.  At present we are waiting until after spring break to make many of these decisions which will be made in conjunction with our administration and coaches.

We will provide updates regarding girls’ soccer, girls and boys rugby, track and field and ultimate after spring break.

As it pertains to Football – the athletic department has distributed preliminary registration packages to many of our students and we would like these registration packages back as soon as possible as it is standard practice to fit all of our players for next season with their gear in April.  We will not be allowing any player to fit for gear until they turn in a registration form  As for Spring Camp what form it takes (individual skill based or combination of skill and contact) will depend on the protocols that are in place as prescribed by the PHO/MHO, Via Sport, BC Schools Sports and our School District as was the case for all of our sports this past year.  We currently can only plan for a skill based spring camp based on the criteria above.  If there is a change to this criteria we will provide an update to that effect.   The plan though is to be ready to go for next September, and in order to do that we need player registrations returned and players gear sized and distributed this April.

It is our hope that with continued attention to the Provincial Health Guidelines regarding Covid 19 protocols and rules and the beginning of the provinces vaccination program that high school sports in our province can resume regular practices and inter school competition as soon as possible.

Thanks so much and stay safe.

Fall Athletic Update

August 28, 2020

Re: Extra Curricular Athletic Activities Update Lord Tweedsmuir Secondary School

Dear Parents:

The Athletic Department at Lord Tweedsmuir would like to update our parent group on the current status of athletic activities at Lord Tweedsmuir.

At the present moment, all extra-curricular sport activities are still suspended by BC School Sports (High School Sport’s Governing Body).  The latest update from BC School Sports on August 13th allows for the current school sports activities ban to be lifted on September 10th, the first day of school for students in BC, provided they can be conducted following the guidelines as published in the K-12 Education Restart Plan.  September 10th would be the first day that School Sports Activities may resume.

However, the parameters around this announcement do not lift the ban on traditional inter-school athletics, as those activities will not be permitted on September 10. This means games between schools and tournaments will not be allowed yet.  Inter-school competition will be re-evaluated in the mid-fall.

Only skills based training may resume September 10th and this training can only occur if:

  • physical distance can be maintained between members of different learning groups (Cohorts)
  • reduced physical contact can be practiced by those within the same learning group (Cohort)

With this announcement comes many challenges.  We would like our athletic parent group to be aware that the resumption of school sporting activities (athletics) at Lord Tweedsmuir may not resume on September 10th as allowed by BC School Sports.   This is because there are a number of factors that need to occur before athletic activities happen.  The athletic department is working with our school district and administration to ensure first and foremost that the necessary educational learning pieces are in place first, before we look at the resumption of athletic activities. (This is currently being worked on at this time).  We also want to ensure that our students get their feet in the door for a period of time and understand the safety measures that are in place while their learning occurs.  While BC School Sports provides a resumption date for school sport extra-curricular activities, it is up to each district and school when that will occur.  We will evaluate with our district, school administration and athletic department whether we can safely offer these activities, and which activities may or may not be available, based on our level of comfort as it pertains to the safety of all involved. This will take time once students are officially back in the school building.  The safety of our students, staff and coaches remains our number one priority.

While each individual school will have safety protocols in place during learning periods for the start of school on September 10, our athletic department is still working to put safety protocols in place if and when athletic activities get the approval to begin at Lord Tweedsmuir.

It is our intention as an athletic department to have a plan in place to offer fall training to our in-season sports first (Cheer, Cross Country, Football, Soccer, Volleyball).  We are not going to put a date on this return to training, but it is our hope to have training plans and safety plans for training in place prior to the end of September.  We will provide an update as it pertains to our winter sports (basketball, ice hockey, wrestling) at a later date.

We understand the integral role school sports plays in a student’s high school experience.  We also understand that there is a discrepancy between school sports and those happening in the community.  Please understand the challenges schools face versus the community are far greater, and we are asking for patience at this time to allow for schools and student learning to begin safely before the athletic department can offer athletic training.  We have encouraged our coaches to reach out and conduct virtual sessions to stay engaged with student athletes during the last few weeks of summer. Some programs and coaches may also be sending registration information to athletes for completion as part of our athletics training safe start up plan (Cheer, Cross Country, Football, Soccer, Volleyball).  For the Grade 8 students new to our school, we will work to communicate athletic opportunities in an appropriate time frame once school begins September 10th.

Thanks so much and stay safe.
